Congratulations to 8th graders Faith Whitaker and Austen Queen for representing O. Henry in the city’s Do the Write Thing contest.

The Do the Write Thing Texas Challenge is an anti-violence and academic program targeted at middle school students. It provides youth the opportunity to think profoundly about the issues surrounding violence and enables them to express themselves through a nationally recognized program.

Entries are judged on the basis of content, originality, and the most thought provoking and responsiveness to these 3 questions: 1. How has violence affected my life? 2. What are the causes of violence? 3. What can I do about violence?

If you have a couple of moments, send a short email to our teachers to show how much you appreciate all they do for our kids.

Walk for the Water Update
Led by our 6th grade World Cultures classes, our April efforts to advocate for clean water have been a tremendous success. Over 60 O. Henry participants took part in the symbolic 3.7 mile walk at the Burger Center on April 28th (557 total participants). Although numbers are not yet finalized, early results indicate that O. Henry is the number one fundraising campus (out of 33 schools) with over $7,000 donated towards a clean water system in Burundi, Africa. Last minute donations will be accepted through May 11th (walkforthewater.com, cash, or check). Final tallies will be available to us on May 15. Beyond walkers and donations, students used their voice to increase awareness of this global problem through posters, public service announcements, presentations and hundreds of conversations with family, friends, classmates and community members. Thank you for everything you and your students have done to use your time, talent and treasure to raise awareness and change lives.

Art News
On Saturday, May 5, seventeen O. Henry art students attended Jr. VASE (Visual Arts Scholastic Event). Each student spoke with a juror about their artwork. O. Henry students received 25 medals of high merit. All students did a fabulous job. A special thanks to all of the parents to helped make this possible for their students. A super congratulations to all students for their beautiful artwork:

HEB Trip
Thanks to the following teachers who took 95 of our students camping for five days/four nights: Michael Shackelford, Alison Hise, Alexis Smith, Andrea Serra, Ashley Malone, Erika Swan, Hannah West, Mark Schoenfeld, and Thanasi Icossipentarhos.

Here were a few highlights from the trip:
The students playing kickball while blindfolded: Trust us, it was just as hilarious as it sounds
A student catching a 10 lb fish and multiple students catching their first fish (it was catch and release, no worries)
Everyone learning how to canoe, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard thanks to Austin Expedition School
The kids practicing their best “Katniss” at the archery range, LOTS of Hunger Games references!
Teaching kids how to sweep, mop, clean toilets, and pick up after themselves (most had never done this type of work before)
Teaching kids how to grill burgers and fajita meat, crack 18 dozen eggs, make biscuits/pancakes/bacon/sausage for 110 people!
Hearing the kids use their conversion formulas while cooking breakfast (how many cups in a gallon, etc…)
Listening to the kids debate their history knowledge during a tough history trivia challenge
Hiking up and down the valley for 4 miles
Jumping off 15 foot cliffs into the Frio River
Watching the kids build boats out of cardboard, duct tape, and trash bags and then race each other across the river
All of these things were so much fun and very exciting to witness, but the greatest reward was hearing the kids share about the trip on the last night. Here are some of the things that were said:
“Preston has been in my class all year, and I always just assumed he was a jokester. It turns out he’s a really cool guy, and I’m really glad we’re friends now.”
“I’ve never met Zana before, but she is the funniest person I’ve ever met.”
“Lewis kept our whole group laughing, and our team wouldn’t have been the same without him.”
“Leslie is awesome; she always kept us on task.”
“Joseph was like our mom, he always kept us in line”
“I made a new best friend”
“I’ve never been away from home this long before, and it’s been awesome!”

April 20, 2012

Dear O. Henry Families and Friends,

Although the district did not make any additional teacher cuts for the 2012-13 school year, we still will be four teachers short. This means that core class size could be 36-38 students! Therefore, we are obliged to restart our fundraising engines, so we can offer our students the finest middle school education in central Texas.

“But why should I donate my hard-earned dollars to O. Henry?” you might ask. Here’s why:

For 60 years, O. Henry has been a cornerstone of West Austin, a thriving, educational institution, providing our children with the highest quality public school education.

O. Henry was one of six middle schools in Texas and one in 100 middle schools across the United States to be recognized as a 2012 School to Watch

Based on AISD’s Value Added data, our math dept. is #1 among all AISD middle schools

“The best science department in AISD” (according to the district’s science supervisor)

This year we were the only Texas school to uplink with the international space station

Our faculty has the 2nd highest number of Masters degrees in AISD (out of 130 schools)

Our teacher turnover rate is among the lowest in the district. Whenever we have an opening, we attract only the best from around the state—everyone wants to work here!

Our Fine Arts, Athletics, and Advisory programs are the envy of the district

Our parents are highly engaged in all aspects of the school

Because of its success, our school is closed to transfers, with a long waiting list to enroll!

The goal of Save Our Teachers II (SOTII) is to raise $220,000 by June 1 (last year we raised $230,000). In order to maintain the level of excellence we have attained, retain our outstanding teachers, and keep class sizes reasonable, we are obliged to ask our families and friends to donate once again. Thanks to a very generous Austin foundation, any financial donation to SOTII will be matched dollar for dollar up to $50,000. Plus, our March golf tournament contributed $20,000. Therefore, in reality, we need to raise $150,000 in the next six weeks.

Once again, we’ll be working with Austin Community Foundation to assist us with the fund-raiser. Here’s how you can donate:

Go to www.austincf.org/ohenrysaveourteachersfund or

Write a check to “O. Henry Middle School” (Sub-heading: Save Our Teachers II) and bring it to the office on or before June 1st.

In summary, excellence is typically more expensive than mediocrity. If we want exemplary teachers, top-notch programs, and smaller class sizes, we will have to pay for them. Please consider contributing to O. Henry to keep our school great! Thank you!

Sincerely,

Each exam will last four hours. Remind them to get to bed early the night before each exam and to eat a healthy breakfast the day of the exam. The student should bring #2 pencils and a good book to read (for after the exam, if they finish early). They also may bring water and some healthy snacks. Start times for lunches will be later this week.

Course Verification Sheets
Current 6th and 7th grade students will receive their course verifications for the 2012-13 school year on Monday, April 23, in RODEO. Note:
This is a listing of the course requests that we are scheduling for your student.
This is not your student’s class schedule–you will receive that on the first day of school.
It is very important that you review these carefully because we will not be making course changes in August. If you find an error, please write down the course(s) that you want to drop and list the course(s) that you want to add.
The form only needs to be returned if there are changes.

Sixth Grade Field Trip
The 6th graders will be heading to Park and Pizza on Friday, April 27, 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

O. Henry Spring Clean-Up/ Garden Workday Scheduled
Help build Insect Hotels and clean up the O. Henry science garden/outdoor classroom. The work day is scheduled for Saturday, April 28, 9 a.m.-12 noon (rain day to be determined if needed.)

If you have any spare items which could be used for constructing the insect hotels bring them to the work day. Items include bricks, twigs or smaller branches, small or broken clay pots, 1/2″-2″ pvc pipe, bamboo, cinder blocks, plywood or any thing else you think an insect could hide in! Please do not purchase new items, but bring materials you might have already at your house.

We also need a hacksaw and parent to help us saw the wood for the insect hotel project. Finally, most of our plants are in good shape after the mild winter we had, but we have lost a few of our native plants. If you are interested in bringing plants to plant on the workday, contact us and we can let you know what types of native plants we can use in our National Wildlife Federation certified native habitat.

Walk for the Water
Our 6th grade World Cultures students are partnering with local non-profits, A Legacy of Giving and The Gazelle Foundation to advocate for clean water. Our campus goal is to raise $1,000 towards the construction of a clean water system for citizens in the Songa region of Burundi, Africa. Additionally, on Saturday, April 28 at 8:30 AM at the Burger Center, everyone is invited to represent OHMS as we join 32 participating schools in walking a 3.7 mile course together to symbolize the average daily, one-way distance that people in developing nations must walk to access clean water. A celebration of our fundraising efforts will immediately follow the walk. Please go to walkforthewater.com to donate, register to walk, or volunteer, or contact Mr. McNally or Mr. Devereaux with questions.

Dress Code
The weather gets warmer and the shorts get shorter! Please remind your students to dress appropriately for school. Last week, we observed a greater number of young ladies wearing shorts that were not longer than mid-thigh. Thanks for your assistance in this matter.

Middle School 101: Workshop for Parents New to Middle School

Mustang Club News
O. Henry All Sports Awards Assembly and Breakfast
Parents, family and friends, please join us in honoring our 2011-12 O. Henry Athletes and Coaches on May 10, 9:00 am in the O. Henry gymnasium. Guest speaker will be Mike Rosenthal, Austin High School Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach. Breakfast will be served to our athletes after the assembly in Cafe O. Henry. GO MUSTANGS and Maroons!!

Incoming 7th grade Athletic Meeting
Parents of incoming O. Henry 7th graders, please join us in Cafe O. Henry on May 10, 5:30 pm to learn about O. Henry athletics. The coaches will talk about important dates, camps and other info re: your athletes. You’ll also hear about the Mustang Club and all that it does for the O. Henry athletic program. Don’t MISS IT!

Hazing
Last weekend, some of our 8th grade boys were paddled by some Austin HS students at Reed Park. Some of the boys received significant injuries. Austin High and O. Henry do not condone this behavior. This tradition needs to stop. Dr. Calzada, Coach Rosenthal, and I are working hard to replace these demeaning practices with positive, team-building traditions. If your student is ever inappropriately treated by high school students, please let me know.

Outdoor Classroom
On Saturday, May 5, Friends of O. Henry will host a reception in the garden of the school from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Please come and support our effort to raise $2,000 to develop a growing, living “Outdoor Classroom” for O. Henry science students and the community.Funds raised will help the O. Henry Science Department continue to enhance the outdoor classroom which was established in the Spring of 2010 using funds provided by the National Wildlife Federation. Plans are to add additional plants to already established gardens as well as establish new gardens that provide habitats for local wildlife. Enhancements will also include the construction of an outdoor learning space that will include benches and outdoor chalkboard.
The May 5th reception will include:

A silent auction from 2:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.

Music by “Mr. Habitat” Bill Oliver

Delicious appetizers from local Austin favorite restaurants

An informative Outdoor Classroom presentation at 2:45 p.m.
