O. Henry E-News: Week of Sept. 19

Drugs and Alcohol
At the beginning of the Friday, Sept. 9 school dance, we pulled aside two of our students because we thought we smelled alcohol on them. We thoroughly screened and questioned them and determined that the two students were not inebriated. These two students then left the dance on their own volition. They were not removed by the administrators. If we believed the students were intoxicated, we would have called the police, and if the police determined they were intoxicated, then the students would have been cited, suspended from our campus for three days, and then sent to the Alternative Learning Campus for 10-20 days.…

2011 Save Our Teachers Donors

Faced with budget cuts that would significantly reduce the teaching staff at O. Henry, Pete Price and the PTA launched a campaign at the beginning of May with a goal of raising $100K in one month to Save Our Teachers and retain manageable class sizes. Generous donors contributed over $200,000 for the cause. Our sincere thanks to everyone who helped preserve the quality of education at our school with your donations!…

Now that we are entering our fourth week of the school year, the students should be comfortable with the policies, procedures, and routines of the school and their individual classrooms. As I have mentioned before, the focus of our first six weeks is building strong, mutually-respectful relationships with the students and to ensure that they all feel safe, confident, and valued. Whenever your student is not feeling good about school, please let us know. Our teachers, counselors, and administrators are experts in assisting early adolescents!…
